Tribute to Aerosmith

In 2013, the TV program Biography aired an episode focusing on the history of the popular and long-lived rock band, Aerosmith. At the end of the show, Steve Morse—a former music critic for The Boston Globe—commented, “Aerosmith still comes out like the Rolling Stones. They still play, and there’s no reason to think they’re gonna stop now.” However, on September 10, 2023, vocalist Steven Tyler fractured his larynx during a concert in Belmont, New York. For many months, it was believed that Tyler’s larynx would heal. Unfortunately, the band members announced in August 2023 that they would no longer tour or do performances, as it had become clear that Tyler’s larynx would never fully recover, thus putting an end to a five-decade career. (As of Jan 14, 2025, Aerosmith is still active).

But, let’s back up and review how their incredible musical journey began. Steven Tyler was born on March 26, 1948. Tyler’s father was a musician, so music has always been a significant part of Tyler’s life. As a teenager, Steven Tyler was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones, (particularly by Keith Richards’ work); and even at that young age, people remarked that he resembled Mick Jagger.

Early on, Tyler sang backing vocals for a pop band called the Left Blanke, perhaps best known for the song “Walk Away, Renee.” He wrote the song “Dream On” during this time, but Left Blanke never used it. Nevertheless, he also met Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton at a local rock show; they were originally part of a band called Jam Band.

Eventually Tyler joined the pair, and the band morphed into Aerosmith, a name that was inspired by Harry Nilsson’s album Aerial Ballet. Tyler, Perry, and Hamilton would be joined by Brad Whitford on guitars. The group toured as an indie rock band before getting noticed by producer Clive Davis, who signed them with Columbia Records. While recording their first album, Tyler was able to include his song “Dream On.”

However—like many artists just starting out—the album did not sell well, and it took quite a while for any of their songs to air on the radio. Thankfully, Clive Davis’ insistence on allowing them tours throughout America gradually built up their fanbase. Joe Perry noted that Aerosmith went from having only 300 people at their concerts to performing before 16,000!

As appears standard with music groups, the band faced significant hurdles. Steven Tyler had a drug habit that affected his work relationship with the rest of the band. During one concert performance, Tyler collapsed on stage; at another time, he crashed his motorcycle and tore his foot, cancelling another concert as he healed. The issues with Tyler prompted Joe Perry to temporarily leave the band and start his own group, the Joe Perry Project. However, this venture was not nearly as successful as Aerosmith. Perry’s girlfriend Billie (now wife) convinced him to return, saying, “If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. What do you have to lose?”

Perry listened and rejoined Aerosmith. Whatever issues there were between Tyler and Perry were put behind them, but Tyler did continue to create problems for the band overall. Steven Tyler still had a drug addiction, and during one concert, he slipped, fell off the stage, fell unconscious, and was initially declared dead. After recovery from that incident, the other band members and their manager formed an intervention, telling Tyler he needed to get clean and kick his drug habit. While Tyler was resistant at first, he finally agreed to enter rehab.

Years later, Tyler again fell off the stage after getting hooked on painkillers, and had to enter rehab once more. Amazingly, whatever accidents or incidents happened to or because of Steven Tyler, he and the band overcame them. In a truly astonishing run, Aerosmith has been performing fairly consistently since the 1970s, maintaining their popularity, relevance to pop culture, and ability to create songs. The band planned to end this extensive career on their own terms with a farewell tour that would begin in 2023. Sadly, Steven Tyler damaged his larynx as described above; evidently beyond healing, the injury put a premature stop to their finale.

Joe Perry remains optimistic that Aerosmith can still continue on in some way, or that Steven Tyler can still possibly make a comeback. Tom Hamilton himself says, “The band is still alive. On the hope scale, I’m somewhere between seven and nine. We won’t be doing any more tours from now on, but I’ll always have hope that other types of opportunities will come along. This isn’t the first time black clouds have been on our horizon, and somehow the sun managed to come out. Time and hope are all we have at the moment.”

Even if Aerosmith can never perform again, (As of Jan 14, 2025, Aerosmith is still active) at least one tribute band is keeping alive their music, on-stage likenesses, and personas. Sweet Emotion performs right here in the Pacific Northwest in Seattle, Washington. Not only do they have the Aerosmith sound down, but everything looks like it’s been transported from the 70s, including hairstyles and clothing. If you’re an Aerosmith fan and are bummed there won’t be an official farewell tour, but would gladly enjoy an honorary one
