Prickly Paranoia | Music Review
What is EMO?
I was recently introduced to a genre of music that I had never heard before, although it has been popular since the 2000s thanks to bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Blink-182. The genre is Alternative Emo, a “subgenre of emo music that emerged in the early 2000s.” It is characterized by a more melodic and accessible sound than traditional emo and typically incorporates elements of pop punk, indie rock, and post-hardcore. Lyrically it often deals with themes of heartache, loss, and relationships.
Introduce you the Band,
Now that you know a little of the history of the genre and can identify some popular Alternative Emo bands, let me introduce you to Prickly Paranoia. I feel they are going to win their own title just like the great bands that have come before them.
I met up with Grace, Prickly Paranoia’s female front. She performs with her partner Austin on lead guitar and their good friend Sean on drums. The Grace and Austin met in 2021 while both were deployed in the Middle East and came up with the group name from having nothing but “prickly” things all around them. Prickly Paranoia has been performing all around the music scene for about a year. They are an incredibly fun and hyperactive indie rock band that will blow your freakin’ mind with their energy and amazing stage presence
Where are the Drummers?
Grace stated that their band, like many others out there, have a hard time finding drummers. She is considering taking drum lessons just in case they find themselves short of a drummer in future shows. I was pleased to inform her that I know a few great female drummers in the independent music scene who also possess fantastic vocals.
