The psychological rock band Ironwill was created by Salvo "Ironwill" Dell'Arte. They hail from Iasi, Romania, but are originally from Italy. Through all their evolutions, the band is still rockin'. Ironwill incorporates many very talented artists that change depending on the project. Current members are Salvo "Ironwill" Dell'Arte on guitar and as project lead; Sherrie Anne Grieve and Jareth Skullek on lead vocals; Calvin Duke on bass; and Carlos Cantatore on drums.
Ironwill has three full-length albums: Unturned (2011), Jonathan's Journey (2019), and Breakout (2021). They have sixteen singles including the latest, “Falling.”
Now the Music Review
Let’s start with "I’m Back to Me,” "Funky Joke,” and “Out of the Cage.” All three songs are incredibly fun to hear and the music videos are exceptional. "I’m Back to Me” is more blues versus rock and has a remarkable vibe. “Funky Joke” was released in 2021 during the COVID shutdown and aimed to put a smile on everyone's faces. I thought both the song and music video completely succeeded in their objective. It’s always a treat when musicians let themselves emerge from their typical musical styles and just have a good time! “Out of the Cage” also came out in 2021, and I feel this single truly showcases Ironwill as the band it is today.
Rock Against Bullying
Salvo initiated the Rock Against Bullying project in 2018. The album Jonathan's Journey, released the following year, portrays the theme of a boy reaching manhood: the loss of innocence and the evolution of a child into an adult. Jonathan is bullied and mocked by his peers because of his obesity. Ironwill is his alter ego and represents redemption from the bullying.
The ten songs on the album are deeply touching and moving. Each song’s lyrics and the accompanying music video depict what this young man went through growing up and being bullied most of his life. (On a personal note, I think just about everyone can relate to this struggle, including myself—I have been bullied, too.) Thanks to Ironwill’s promotion of this concept, there has been growing support for Rock Against Bullying.
Ironwill is part of a varied kaleidoscope in which all artistic forms are incorporated into the production of their visions: music, photography, video, comics, illustrations, and other works of art. This can particularly be seen in Jonathan’s Journey.
Phantom of the Opera
Many rock and metal bands have covered the famous 1986 song, "The Phantom of the Opera,” but Ironwill’s version is simply amazing. One of Salvo's dreams was to record the classic song in a techno-metal style, and they even got to perform it live in July 2022 during a wide-ranging theatrical event.
Fun fact: "The Phantom of the Opera" was originally recorded by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley in 1986, before the stage musical of the same name premiered in London's West End. The song became a hit single in the UK that year. In the musical, Brightman and Michael Crawford sang the song as Christine Daaé and the Phantom, respectively. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the song, with lyrics by Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, and Mike Batt. It remains a highly iconic and popular musical.
New Single: “Falling”
“Falling” is Ironwill’s newest single, just released on May 20, 2024. The song is about a religious war that perpetuates widespread and terrible destruction. Its message is powerful and presents an idea of what could happen if wars continued unchecked. The directive is perfectly clear, spelled out with the driving psychological rock that Ironwill is famous for delivering. If they are working on a full album and “Falling” is just the single to get it started, I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the story!
Album Art
I want to make a special callout concerning the art for all of Ironwill’s albums and many of their singles. They have beautiful and phenomenal covers that give you the perfect vibe for the music and immediately set the mood before you hit play on your device. I am not sure who does their art, but it is simply amazing. I am also an artist, so I wanted to make sure I commented on it.
IRONWILL Tour
Sadly, Ironwill is not touring in the USA but over the Pond in Europe. Their first stop was at Metalfest in Czechia. I was able to watch a few clips of their live sets on Facebook and was struck by the amazing charisma radiated by each performer. Both lead vocals, Sherrie Anne Grieve and Jareth Skullek, performed brilliantly together as Salvo "Ironwill" Dell'Arte strutted out across the stage to tease the audience, with Carlos Cantatore on drums pounding the rhythm. They are very cool to watch and I am looking forward to catching more of their performances. I will have their live clips on the side panel and I encourage my readers to be wowed for themselves.
