Sniffing Out the Great Music
Let's Talk About The Music has been on hiatus for a bit, but is back checking out the fabulous local music scene. This time LTATM visited El Corazon/Funhouse in Seattle, WA, on June 18.
There was an amazing lineup that evening, but as I watched each band perform there was one band that made me look up, stop messing with my new camera, and take notice. Telomyras was onstage, and as a metal growl came out of Sammie Gorham on vocals, it felt like she was waking up every strong, fierce, wild woman of the past.
Who is Telomyras?
Telomyras has five talented members: Sammie Gorham – vocals, Gavynn Peterson – drums, Eric Thomas – bass guitar, Ephraim Grimm – guitar, and Jack Schonher – guitar. Ephraim Grimm started the band back in 2021 as the pandemic was winding down. They hail from all around the country, but they rock together beautifully.
I know what you are asking — what does “Telomyras” mean? During my research, I found their interview on Unrated Magazine by Locke Dan which explained its origins:
“ Gavynn Peterson wanted to go with “Telomere” after the medical/science term for the ends of DNA. The name was of course taken. I had the idea to combine the prefix Telo (End) with a word/name like Mira (“admirable,” “peace,” “female ruler,” and more) and make up the word Telomyras. It just means something like “Admirable End.” Funny that we ended up being female fronted because she rules the stage when we play. Many of our Spanish speaking listeners have remarked that the name sounds funny in Spanish, which I find hilarious.”
Personal note: I understand a strong woman, as I am one. I really connected with Ms. Sammie’s primeval growl, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet them. I wanted to dash home to write about the amazing concert that I witnessed.
Their Stage Performance:
I have found a number of blogs written about this local band from Seattle and their music releases, but I haven't seen anyone describe their stage performances. So, allow Let's Talk About the Music to enthusiastically rave over Telomyras’ on-stage magic.
I loved how they danced and jammed together, delivering an incredible and energetic show for the audience while on a tiny stage at the Funhouse of El Corazon in Seattle. Each guitarist (including the bass) had their own solo which was absolutely breathtaking for any music aficionado. Gavynn Peterson on drums was way in the back where I could barely see him, but I heard every powerful beat driving the band forward. When Sammie Gorham sang, she utterly owned that stage. You could feel the power from them all as they electrified the audience.
Their Music:
Telomyras has one full EP, self-titled Telomyras, and three demos out on their Bandcamp account. Their music is awesome to listen to, but I would rather go out to see them live. Listening to them on Basecamp or Spotify does not do them justice. You will have a blast watching them on stage, and I am looking forward to seeing them again.
LTATM wants to honor everyone in the independent music community, something we have been doing since 2015. All of Telomyras’ interviews and other music-related information will be on the side panel.
They're on tour:
They are a local band from Seattle, WA and currently on their way, to Blades of Steel in Madson, WI on August 29-31st, 2024. You can conveniently access comprehensive details regarding their tour dates and venues by checking out the website's side panel. Additionally, for more updates and behind-the-scenes content, you can also connect with Telomyras on their Facebook.
Small Details on the Venue
El Corazón means "the heart" in Spanish and has been functioning as a live music venue, club, and bar since 2019. They have launched some of our famous Seattle, WA, bands. Funhouse is a “sister” of El Corazón and is located just a door down. They have hosted up-and-coming punk, rollers, and others that have helped shape Seattle music.
